This story is actually kind of crazy…
On one of Marla’s visits to LA with some jewelry friends, someone pulled out a small bag of spinels, which he called "Jedi spinels," a name coined by the well-known gem dealer Vincent Pardieu in the early 2000s. According to Pardieu, the name was inspired by the fact that these stones were "untouched by the dark side." They are notoriously difficult to set because their unique octahedral shape makes it hard to know which way to "attack" them without risking a cut—something no one would want to do.
Marla had a vision: these stones needed to be encased in egg-shaped crystals, designed to form a Lock, a Chain, and a pair of Earrings, ultimately creating a parure (a set of matching jewelry intended to be worn together…but in the spirit of our jewelry, can also be worn independently).
Marla reached out to Michael Peuster, a master stone cutter with whom we had previously worked on the Trundle Lock Bracelet, who agreed to help bring her vision to life. We then set the crystal pieces he sent back in platinum because Marla loved how it offset the spinels. The "Egg Lock" detaches from the chain and can be worn in different ways. The chain consists of interlocking platinum “cans,” with more spinels embedded on either side. These spinels spin and look different from every angle. The total carat weight is 29.34, and the set is truly bonkers.
