How to Wear & Style Marla Aaron Earrings
How to Wear & Style Marla Aaron Earrings
The Earring Project.
The Earring Project has the word “project” in its name for a reason: W e never intended for it to be finished.
It began, as many things here do, with an obsession and quite a bit of misdirection. At one point (very early on) there were earrings that looked like tiny light bulbs and actually unscrewed. Eventually , we arrived at the idea that has remained constant ever since: an earring should not have to be just one earring.
The Earring Project is a system. You begin with a Base, add a Lozenge, and change it depending on your mood, what you’re wearing, where you’re going or simply because you feel like it.
It is a sophisticated system designed to be taken very unseriously .
Which is perhaps the whole point of the Earring Project: It keeps changing because the person wearing it can, too.
How the system works.
Every earring starts with a Base. Each Base has a track on the back. Lozenges and Discs slide onto that track, and closing the Base locks them in. Open it and everything comes off in seconds. Everything is sold individually on purpose.
Base: Wearable alone or loaded up. Skinny, Dome, or Pierceless.
Lozenge: The stone. Cushion, Oval, or Drop. Two sided, so each side reads differently.
Disc: Ultra thin and lightweight. Available in two size.
How to Build an Earring.
How to stack earrings, in our system: pick a Base, open it, slide on what you want, close it.
1. Pick your Base. Skinny sits tight to the ear like a thick line rather than a hoop. Dome has more presence on its own. Pierceless springs closed against the ear.
2. Slide on a Lozenge. It sits on the track on the back of the Base. Each Lozenge has an internal spring interact securely with the rest of the system.
3. Stack another, or two. Length is your call.
4. Cap it with a Disc, or don't. A 45mm Disc is the statement. A Mini Disc is the quieter version.
5. Close it. Once you close your earring it locks everything into place. Go wear it.
Let's talk about Donut.
Every once in a while, we make a piece that cannibalizes half the collection. Donut may be the worst offender yet.
Why? Because Donut is several things at once.
Donut is a Lock: a lever mechanism that can close a chain, necklace, bracelet—whatever—and hold charms.
Donut is an Earring: a tiny retractable ball at the top allows it to connect to our earring bases and lozenges.
Donut is Working Dot—and more: it connects to our earring Lozenges so they can be worn as charms on a necklace.
And, in its simplest form, Donut is a charm. With a very satisfying click, retract the mechanism that allows it to do so much, and have its lever Lock onto a chain and have it sit there– it looks striking doing nothing at all.
Donut exceeds workhorse expectations. It does more than almost any single piece we’ve ever made.
If you already have our jewelry, Donut unlocks an entirely new set of possibilities. If you’re new to it, it gives you those possibilities from the start.
Beautiful. Functional. Playful. Very Donut. We cannot wait to see what you do with it.
Earring Bases.
Start with a base and build up from there! All of our Earring Bases --including Dome and Pierceless-- come with or without pavé stones. The whole system is modular so the back piece includes a channel for our Lozenges and Discs to slide in and out easily.
Lozenges.
We’ve expanded our Lozenge assortment with more faceted stones, we’ve introduced more mixed stone combinations – each side presents a different look – more color, greater variety and an overall elevation in the quality of the stones themselves. Cushion, Drop or Oval -- all in 18k gold.
Discs.
Our Discs are cut to just under 2mm of thickness. Marla contextualizes this by saying “that’s thinner than most sliced deli meats.” They are unimaginably lightweight and convertible and we are constantly experimenting with them. They come in two sizes and are rimmed in 18k gold.
The Working Dot.
At its essence, Working Dot a charm facilitator — a perfectly sweet little piece you can add to a Lock. But hidden on its side is a tiny mechanism that changes everything: it lets you attach elements from our Earring Project. Suddenly, earrings become charms. Charms become earrings. The lines blur, and the fun begins.
The Working Dot works with all of our Lozenges and Discs. You can even wear it with the Donut for maximum play.
FAQ
Will the Lozenges stay on while I wear them?
Closing the Base locks the track, so nothing slides off. W e added an internal spring to our Lozenges so they interact more securely with the rest of the system.
Can I buy one earring instead of a pair?
Yes. Our Earring bases are sold individually or as a pair, and Lozenges and Discs sell individually. We built it that way for ultimate play.
Do all Lozenges fit all Bases?
The Lozenges and Discs work across the Earring Bases, Donut and Working Dot in the current collection. Email info@marlaaaron.com if you need further assistance.
Can I wear an earring Lozenge on a necklace?
Yes, with Donut or a Working Dot.
Does Donut work with chains I already own?
Use the lever to add it to your Loops like you would a Lock! Add it like a charm to another chain.
Convertible earrings ask a different question than most earrings do. Not which pair, but which pieces. A Base is the constant. Everything after it is a decision you get to make again tomorrow, which is why we sell the parts separately and why we like them worn unmatched. If you want to see the system assembled, start with our earring collection or explore the individual pieces. Asymmetrical earrings are the easiest place to start. Wear a loaded stack on one side and a bare Base on the other and you have already used the system correctly. From there, earring charms move. A Lozenge comes off a Base and onto a chain or a strand, a Disc becomes a pendant, and a Donut closes whichever one you picked. Our rings work the same way, mechanically speaking, because most things here do. If you would rather talk it through with someone holding the pieces, book a virtual appointment.
