Why are we giving away locks to single moms?
We give locks away to single moms. We have been doing it since 2016.
We do this because I was a single mom when my son was small. Then I met my husband and together with our children we made a family.
Being a single mom was the most difficult time in my life.
Mother's Day was specifically bittersweet. When you have a small child and it’s Mother’s Day and virtually everyone around you has a partner who is celebrating their “motherliness”… well it can feel sad.
I remember that feeling and I want to give back in a small personal way.
We give away sterling silver special edition Baby Heartlocks to single moms. You can't buy them. We only give them away. We kick it off every year a few weeks before Mother's Day on Instagram. The response is always amazing. (You can take a look at some of the videos and photos from the kickoff if you go to the hashtag #lockyourmom on Instagram).
The stories we hear are beautiful and hard and courageous and loving. Giving the locks is a small thing in the grand scheme of things but we have found that they make the recipients happy. It is that simple. To date we have given away thousands of locks to single moms all over the country. And we are not done yet.
Why do the locks have an exclamation point on them?
Our locks have 6 sides on which to engrave names, words, messages... anything. I was thinking about what to engrave on these very special locks and "Mom" didn't quite work because that is not universal. What IS universal is the powerful, speechless feeling of motherhood. The !!! of motherhood — both how it feels to be a mother and how one feels about their mother... so that's what we did.
How can I participate if I am, know, or love a single mom?
That’s a great question. Be on the look out on our Instagram for when we announce another #lockyourmom moment. We do it on Mother's Day and a couple of other times throughout the year. Follow the hashtag #lockyourmom.
