You'll notice the variation in colors throughout the strand. Some are much lighter and some are very dark and opaque. All are considered corundum but the color determines the classification of ruby or sapphire. What many people don’t know is that ruby and sapphire have the same genetic makeup, considered corundum, but the presence of chromium is what makes rubies red, while titanium and iron make blue sapphires blue. You can see this spectrum demonstrated beautifully within a single strand here.
